Abstract: Background : Orthopedic Surgical procedure are very common & accompanied by many complications .A Knowledgeable & Observant nurse can prevent these complication upto great extent . Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge of staff nurses regarding npost-operative complications of orthopedic surgey .Methodology : A quasi-experimental non-equivalent pre-test post test control group design study was done on 60 staff nurses in selected hospitals of Amritsar .thirty were included in the experimental group ,who received structured teaching programas planned and implemented by the researcher and 30 were in the control group. Results: Both the group were homogenous with respect to selected socio-demographic variables .study finding revealed that, in pre-test majority (80%) of staff nurses of control group and 76.7% staff nurses in experimental group had average level of knowledge .on comparison of pre –test and post –test knowledge scores in control and experimental group ,t value cane out to be highly significant (p<0.001). Thus, structured teaching program was found to be effective in increasing the knowledge of staff nurses.

Introduction
WHO (2006) estimates that worldwide almost 124 million orthopedic surgical procedures are performed easch year. This translates into 1 for every 25 people in the world. the incidence in India is not projected clearly owing to its poor standards on statistics .majority of the patients who undergo the procedure get well and go home. However ,major complications range from 3% to 16% and rates of permanent disability or death range from 0.4% to 0.8%.1 Black M J (2005 ) defined orthopedics as the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal diseases ,infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.2 smeltzer CS et al (2008) decribed that the foundation of the body is provided by 206 bones which all together form the skeletal system .normal functioning bones provide huge strength to a person enabling him or her to feel confident to do any of the bones severely alters the lifestyle .especially if the injuries are like hip fracture ,spine fracture ,or head injury the victim may feel life as a punishment rather than a boon .the condition goes more drastic if it is accompanied by complications due to provision of improper treatment or post operatively due to negligence .surgery is the most common orthopedic procedure performed in the adults .pressure ulcers, pulmonary embolism ,deep vein thrombosis ,wound infection ,hemorrhage, compartment syndrome ,urinary retention ,acute respiratory distress syndrome and cardiac events are the most frequent complications seen. These complications among orthopedic client .although post –operative complications incidents have been reduced due to modern facilities and aseptic measures in developed countries .but still the rate of post –operative complications is high in developing countries like india 3 . januel JM et al (2012) stated that Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein. After surgery with preventative treatment ,DVT develops in about 10 of 1000 people after total or partial knee replacement and in about 5 of 1000 after total or partial hip replacement .major orthopedic surgery-total hip replacement ,total knee replacement or hip fracture surgery –has a hight risk of causing
